Charles Douglas Helms

1945-1994

A native of Union County, Doug was a graduate of East Carolina University and a U.S. Navy veteran.  Through his studies and travels around the world, Doug developed lasting friendships with renowned potters, including Haw Gang and potters in the Seagrove-Jugtown area of North Carolina.

Through his 18-year career as a teacher and potter at Wingate University, Doug was loved by his students and fellow faculty members.  He was awarded the Corts Excellence in Teaching Award posthumously in acknowledgement of his devotion and high standards within his field.

*  In addition to his formal education and his accomplishments in various categories of art, Doug’s passion was for the clay.  He found reference to his profession in the scriptures Jeremiah 18: 1-6, when God spoke to Jeremiah at the potter’s house and said, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand.”  It is this facet of Doug’s life and his love for the creation of objects of beauty and usefulness from simple lumps of clay that the Arts Council seeks to recognize exceptional pottery artists with the Doug Helms Potter’s House Award.
