* In addition to his formal education and his accomplishments in various categories of art, Doug’s passion was for the clay. He found reference to his profession in the scriptures Jeremiah 18: 1-6, when God spoke to Jeremiah at the potter’s house and said, “Like clay in the hand of the potter, so are you in My hand.” It is this facet of Doug’s life and his love for the creation of objects of beauty and usefulness from simple lumps of clay that the Arts Council seeks to recognize exceptional pottery artists with the Doug Helms Potter’s House Award.

Categories
Painting-1: oil
Painting-2: acrylic and watercolor
Drawing-1 Black & White: pencil, pen & ink, conte, charcoal
Drawing-2 Color: pastel, oil crayon, color pencil, pen & ink
Mixed Media-1: artwork that uses more than one type of material to create a relief, collage or assemblage. Combinations of painting and drawing only should be submitted into either the Painting or Drawing categories.
Photography & Digital Imagery: Photography - analog photography that requires the use of film and chemical processing to develop the image and print. May be black & white or color. Digital Imagery – images captured through the use of a digital camera as opposed to a 35 mm film or other film-based camera. Images may be adjusted using imagery software, but heavily transformed/manipulated or digitally photo-collaged works should be submitted in the Computer Art category
Computer Art – Digitally captured images that are heavily manipulated or collaged to create an electronic mixed media OR images generated by computer imaging software.
Sculpture
Crafts-1: ceramics, pottery
Crafts-2: fiber, glass, metal, wood
Note: If the judge feels an entry has been incorrectly categorized, the entry will not be considered for an award.
Eligibility
The exhibition is open to artists 18 years of age or older. The exhibit is juried from actual two and three-dimensional original works of art, entirely the work of a single artist, executed within the last two years and never exhibited in
Specifications
Two-dimensional art pieces must be completely dry, securely framed, wired and ready to hang (no clip, sawtooth hangers, staples or tape). Work must not be larger than 36” in any dimension including frame and the weight must not exceed
50 lbs. Three-dimensional work must not exceed 75 lbs., 30” x 30” footprint and 60” high. The artist must provide pedestals/display stands for three-dimensional work.
Sales
Sales are encouraged. The Arts Council will receive 20% donation from all sales.
Liabilities
The Arts Council will exercise the best possible care in handling of all works; however, cannot be held responsible for any damage or loss due to any cause.
Entries & Fees
A maximum of three entries per artist may be submitted. Entry fee - $25.00. Make check payable to Union County Community Arts Council. Each entry must be accompanied by one completed label and on completed entry form. Only entries juried into the show will be exhibited. NO SLIDES PLEASE.
