Arts in Education

Arts in Education programs and services provided by the Union County Community Arts Council serve 55 schools in Union County. Over 38,000 students receive cultural arts opportunities annually.

Students all across Union County directly benefit from the Union County Community Arts Council’s arts focus. With the endorsement of the Union County Public School board, superintendent, administrators and teachers, the Council continues to enrich and deepen the cultural education of our children.

Students in all Union County elementary, middle and high schools receive cultural arts programs and services that enhance North Carolina curriculum guidelines and serve students by promoting character and moral development, fluency and provide tools and strategies that help contribute to a lifetime of interpersonal skills.

Our services are vital to the overall learning process of students and data supporting the benefits of arts education are documented in the NC Arts Council’s “The Arts in North Carolina” publication. Students who participate in educational arts activities are:

  • Four times more likely to be recognized for academic achievement
  • Four times more likely participate in math and science fairs
  • Three times more often elected to class offices within their schools
  • Three times more likely to win an award for school attendance

Larry Robinson honored with Heart of the Arts Lifetime Achievement Award

larry

The Union County Community Arts Council honored Larry Robinson with a ‘Heart of the Arts’ Lifetime Achievement Award on Saturday, Feb. 4 at the council’s annual Night for the Arts event. Robinson was honored for his devotion, commitment and the significant contributions he’s made to the cultural arts in Union County throughout his career.

Robinson began teaching art at Monroe Middle School in the mid-1980’s. He later became an arts instructor at Parkwood Middle School where he was named Teacher of the Year in 1999. He currently teaches theater at Central Academy of Technology and Arts and is the artistic director for the Union County Performance Ensemble.

During his career, he has received many awards for directing, technical theater and his students acting accomplishments. A number of his students have been honored with Best Actor awards at the North Carolina Conference Regional and State Festivals. Several of his students have also competed in the National Shakespeare competition at Lincoln Center in New York City.

In 2011, Robinson became a playwright and his play, "Illuminations", was named winner of the North Carolina New Play Project by the Greensboro Playwright’s Forum. This past November one of CATA’s productions earned Robinson and his students awards at the Southeastern Theatre Conference in Chattanooga, TN. Robinson received the John Parker Award for Directing during the conference.
